I am an award-winning investigative journalist, and a frequent media commentator. I'm currently the Chair of the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ). At the CAJ I created a media diversity survey to measure the gender and race of journalists at a national level for the first time ever. I also established a mentorship program for early-career journalists and increased the organization’s legal advocacy work on press freedom issues, including multiple Supreme Court victories.
I was the first employee of the media oulet The Logic. At The Logic I was responsible for helping refine the editorial vision as well as recruiting, hiring and managing a team of reporters and editors. I was named the Best Young Business Journalist from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) for my work at The Logic. I also picked up the gold medal in the Scoop category from SABEW for my story: "Selling off airports, major highways, utilities and Canada Post could net over $200 billion: Government report".
Prior to that I was on staff at the National Post as the 2017 Michelle Lang Fellow where I built a searchable database of five million political donations, revealing the biggest donors in every province and territory for the first time in Canadian history. I won a Data Journalism Award from the Global Editors Network in 2018 for that project. I also picked up the Project of the Year award from the National Newspaper Awards.
In both 2017 and 2018, I won the Goff Penny Award for Canada's best young journalist, in the large circulation category for my work at the National Post.
Prior to joining the Post, I was a staff reporter at Maclean's magazine. At Maclean's I wrote about foreign affairs, human rights, and politics. I also published an investigative piece on sexual violence that won the national Excellence in Post-Secondary Education Journalism prize. At the Globe and Mail I wrote about grade inflation, unpaid internships, and other topics you can see in my portfolio.
My byline has appeared in the Toronto Star, Maclean's, the Globe and Mail, and University Affairs. I've also appeared on CBC, Global, CTV, Rogers, Newstalk 1010 and CP24, among others. At CP24 I was a weekly panellist on the Stephen LeDrew show in the run up to the 2011 Ontario provincial election, providing analysis on the progress of the election, as well as commentary as results came in.
I have been recognized as one of Canada's Top 20 Under 20, and an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year. I received the Top 20 Under 20 award for work I did while Student Trustee on the Toronto District School Board, representing 260 000 students on the largest school board in Canada. Simultaneously, I served as President, public, of the Ontario Student Trustees' Association, representing 2 million students. Specifically, I successfully lobbied for cellphones to be returned to TDSB schools, fought for greater transparency and accountability surrounding student fees and started the Ontario Student Survey, which quantified student opinion about their education system, and how it could be improved.
I speak regularly at conferences on a variety of topics. I have experience both leading private sessions, and addressing groups as large as 20 000.
